Beginnings of a
mat painter

JMTejido started painting on mats in 2001 to offer a new form of abstract art and to mark his signature style. Partnered with an export company for mat production, JMTejido’s mats ensure longevity and good quality. Mats are treated, and coated with paints and an after glaze that locks in the mats’ pores and in-between weaves.

His first take was in an illustrators competition named “Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustrations,” a bi-annual contest sponsored by Unseco, and held in Japan. Not gaining any merit in 2002, JMTejido developed his style and joined again in 2006, and was awarded as one of the 10 Runners-up for his work, “My Home is My Pet.” A travel grant to attend the awarding ceremony in Ueno, Tokyo was given by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in 2007.
